Simple Tips for Furnishing a Vacation Home for Guests

Sfaturi simple de a amenaja o casa de vacanta pentru oaspeti

More and more people are opening their homes to travelers from around the world, a trend that has become especially popular among those who own a second apartment in the city, by the sea, or in the mountains. But how do you attract guests and earn five-star reviews? Above all, it takes empathy, the willingness to welcome strangers as if they were old friends, and a space that makes them feel truly at home.

To achieve that, you need a clean, calm vacation home with rooms furnished in a practical and tasteful way. Here are a few ideas for making guests happy, from the oldest to the youngest.

Decorate in a Way That Reflects Your Personality

The golden rule is to focus on cleanliness and functionality, but also on style: your own. Keep in mind that you will be hosting different kinds of people, and no single design choice will please everyone. Make sure the essentials are there for a comfortable stay — air conditioning, Wi-Fi, television, and the like — but pay attention to the atmosphere too.

Add a few vintage pieces that tell your story, along with small seasonal decorations throughout the year, not only at Christmas. Your personal touch gives the home character, making it more welcoming and soothing at the same time.

Dress the rooms with the things you love: paintings, favorite books, perfumes, and plants that make the home feel fresh and alive. You can also include elements of local culture, such as musical instruments, images of distinctive places in the city, or traditional handmade objects. This helps you share a bit of your world with guests and enriches their stay. And first impressions matter, especially at the very first place guests encounter: the entrance.

The Entrance Is Your First Business Card

This is where the first few minutes of meeting your guests happen, and where you can immediately show them what your home has to offer. Choose practical but elegant furniture that reflects your taste and attention to detail: a bench for luggage, a coat rack for jackets and hats, shelves or trays for emptying pockets. Think about small conveniences too, such as a switch near the front door to help guests orient themselves at night and an umbrella stand for rainy days. Even if you live in a place where it hardly ever rains, guests will notice the care you put into every detail.

A King-Size Bed That Invites Real Rest

The same principle applies to the bedroom: beautiful, but above all functional, starting with the most important piece of furniture, the bed. Guests rarely compromise on sleep, so it should be extremely comfortable, allowing them to unwind and recover after a day of sightseeing.

The mattress should be comfortable, with clean, ironed sheets, ideally in sober colors and made of cotton, which is hygienic and pleasant for all skin types. For blankets, choose materials according to the season, but always favor natural fabrics: wool, goose down, summer duvets, and perhaps a plaid throw that adds both warmth and decoration. Pillows matter too. Keep a few extras in the wardrobe or arrange several on the bed. Mixing shapes, sizes, and contrasting colors can create a polished, magazine-worthy effect.

Other essential items include wardrobes, bedside tables, and a desk where guests can take notes, check maps, or plan their routes. If you place a corkboard on the wall, you can pin your suggestions for events, restaurants, and city itineraries. It becomes a useful little space for shaping the next day’s plans.

Lighting deserves just as much attention. For the windows, choose double curtains: a light one that allows privacy while still letting in daylight, and a heavier one for the darkness needed for a good night’s sleep. Use the right lamps for different areas of the room, including reading lights near the bed and at the desk, accessible switches, and dimmers. Style matters, but so does practicality, especially when the goal is to create an intimate and comfortable environment.

Finally, consider the temperature. For proper rest, it should stay between 20 °C and 22 °C throughout the year. Once those practical details are in place, you can focus on the finishing touches: prints on the walls, hooks, mirrors, and rugs at the foot of the bed for a soft landing in the morning.

A Fully Equipped Kitchen

Some guests prefer eating out, while others do not want to give up cooking even on vacation, perhaps because they want to try local recipes. That is why the kitchen should be well equipped. Pots and pans are essential, but so are spices, fresh fruit, and maybe a few regional specialties. The most thoughtful hosts always leave the basics on hand, at least enough for a simple plate of pasta.

Think about guests arriving late in a city they do not know and not wanting to go back out. What will they eat? It is a kind gesture to leave them what they need for a first meal, the same way you would for close friends. Do not forget wine glasses, for those who want to enjoy a romantic evening or improvise a toast. Finally, make sure sponges and cleaning products are easy to find, so tidying up is quick and effortless.

A Fresh and Clean Bathroom

The bathroom is the home’s most obvious place for relaxation and comfort, and nothing should be missing there. It should offer spotless fixtures, freshly washed towels, scented soaps and lotions, toothpaste, and a few new toothbrushes — ideal for someone who forgot to pack one and should not have to search for a shop in an unfamiliar city.

The bathroom becomes even more appealing when it has a distinctive, personalized look. You can furnish it with recycled pieces or introduce a freestanding bathtub. Soaking in warm water after a long day is something many guests will appreciate. A basket with candles and bath scents can also help create the right atmosphere, so nothing is missing from the experience.

Little Comforts That Make a Big Difference

Travelers value special moments, and it is your job to do what you can to help them enjoy unique experiences in your guest home. Create relaxing corners where they can read, drink tea, or listen to good music. You do not necessarily need a full living room; a couple of armchairs, a table, and some pretty cups in the kitchen may be enough to encourage a pleasant atmosphere. Meditation spaces are welcome too, since many people travel precisely to reflect and unwind.

For children, a basket filled with books and toys can make a stay feel much easier and more enjoyable. Families also appreciate safe, clean spaces and useful accessories such as high chairs, cots, changing tables, and baby-friendly dishes. There are many ways to show that you enjoy hosting: a bouquet of fresh flowers, a personalized card, a cake made by hand, or a small welcome gift. As the idea at the heart of it all suggests, success depends not only on a welcoming home but also on the desire to share it — to open the door to someone arriving from far away, who may begin as a guest and perhaps leave as a friend.
